Movie Review: Twilight

Title: Twilight
Based On: Stephanie Meyer's - Twilight
Running Time: 122 minutes
Director: Catherine Hardwicke
Writer: Melissa Rosenberg
Stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Billy Burke

'Bella Swan has always been a little bit different. Never one to run with the crowd, Bella never cared about fitting in with the trendy, plastic girls at her Phoenix, Arizona high school. When her mother remarried and Bella chooses to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she didn't expect much of anything to change. But things do change when she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen. For Edward is nothing like any boy she's ever met.

He's nothing like anyone she's ever met, period. He's intelligent and witty, and he seems to see straight into her soul. In no time at all, they are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance - unorthodox because Edward really isn't like the other boys. He can run faster than a mountain lion. He can stop a moving car with his bare hands. Oh, and he hasn't aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he's immortal. That's right - vampire. But he doesn't have fangs - that's just in the movies. And he doesn't drink human blood, though Edward and his family are unique among vampires in that lifestyle choice.

To Edward, Bella is that thing he has waited 90 years for - a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. Somehow or other, they will have to manage their unmanageable love. But when unexpected visitors come to town and realize that there is a human among them Edward must fight to save Bella? A modern, visual, and visceral Romeo and Juliet story of the ultimate forbidden love affair - between vampire and mortal.'

There are a good few things that I love about this movie and then one or two things that I had problems with.

One of the main things that I loved about this movie is how the kept the awkward father-daughter relationship between Charlie and Bella. Charlie's character was one that I did laugh at so many times in the movie. And no matter how many times I watch it, I will always laugh at some of his lines. Billy Burke did a great job at playing Bella's over protective father.

All of Bella's friends gave some great comic relief in the movie. All the way from her first day at school to the Prom. I couldn't help but laugh at the way Mike tries to flirt with her and the way the girls talk about Edward Cullen and ask Bella for advice with dresses and the boys.

The soundtrack to the movie was absolutely beautiful. It's just breathtaking. The mix of the classical music in the film with some more recent music. It all just fit together and slotted into the scenes quite perfectly.

The flashbacks in the movie was both really useful and really well made. The fact that they used a sepia tone for them reinstated the fact that it was looking back. It was really nice to see the legends between the werewolves and the vampires and to see the way that Edward was turned into a vampire. Even though it wasn't needed, I thought it was really nice to watch and just gave the movie something a little more.

I'll be honest though, some of the acting did seem a little stiff. I get that the characters like Edward and Bella were supposed to be quite awkward, even with each other but it still felt very static. It wasn't the whole way through the movie, there was just the odd scene where it did seem more awkward than I thought it would be. Some of the camera angles in the movie were a little bit odd and it did seem like the camera was shaking a bit as well.

But other than those two small points, I did love the movie. It was really enjoyable to watch and the scenery in it was quite beautiful in some of the scenes. I would be more than happy to keep watching this movie.
